I’m in a funk right now.
We all get that way from time to time and it can take a hell of a lot to get you out of it.
I’m not talking about clinical depression or anxiety. I’m talking about funk.
What is funk?
A funk is similar to eating too much pizza.
You feel heavy. Like you can’t do anything you want to. The couch calls to you. You don’t want to wake up. Exercise is out of the question. Work feels like tar is dripping off your fingers.
This happens to me about 4 times a year. I don’t know how I get into them, but I know how to get out of them. Follow me out of the underworld and away from Hades’ clutches.
Step 1 - Find the Thing
Take out a piece of paper. Write down something simple that you can do every day. Here’s a list of things that worked for me in the past.
Make the bed
2-minute breathing exercise
5-minutes of writing ideas
Doing the dishes
Tape that sucker to your mirror and commit.
Do it every day.
Never skip and write down on the paper how many times you’ve done it.
Step 2 - Make it Awesome
“If it’s not a hell yeah, it’s a no.” - Derek Sivers
Find something incredible. Something that lights you up from the inside. There has to be something. Something you’re longing for.
I have options available that work most of the time. Lately, that has been photography.
Taking great pictures and videos has lit me up like a fire. I was fortunate enough to have some extra cash for gear. Dove deep into the creator train and started creating as much as I can over the past few weeks.
I found a new passion and pride in my work.
You have something. If you don’t know what it is, look at someone who inspires you. If you see something and it evokes strong emotions from within, it’s something you want.
Step 3 - Forgive & Let Go
Let’s be real. There is something holding you down. There is a weight. Like I said earlier, it feels like pizza and heavy food weighing you down.
You have to find a way to let it go. Forgive that person. More importantly, forgive yourself. There is power in cleaning your soul.
Find a way to do that and you’ll be able to tap into the power to cure your funk.
You need to uncover the fire within and get some real momentum in your life.
Find it.
