Traven's Thoughts Part 2: Critics

It was never the first step or even the second that’s hardest for me.

I burn out at about the 6th step.

I know myself pretty well to get past the first few obstacles. It’s when I hit that step that I start to listen to other people and that doubt creeps in.

Critics

Everyone wants to be a critic, because they feel that they are adding value with their comment.

I honestly don’t blame them. I do the same thing.

I feel that I know what needs to happen and how people need to approach things. That’s why people have a hard time interacting with me on their projects. I’m brutally honest. I try really hard to be nice about it, but my good intentions open up the floodgates of anxiety and doubts on that person.

Nobody likes that.

Take Away

The answer is two fold. Listen to people reaching out and don’t listen to certain people giving feedback. You know who the people are that you shouldn’t listen to. It’s not a question about who, it’s about trusting yourself to know who you should listen to.

Here are some hints:

  • How do you feel when you tell this person things?

  • Do they ask questions about what you want to do?

  • Would you trust this person with your money?

  • What projects are they working on?

    • Do they have similar aspirations?

I believe you innately know the answers you’re looking for and just need a person to be a soundboard. That’s ok and can be very productive. My caution to you is to trust very few people.
